Dubai: A Narrative of Hierarchy

We explored a narrative of how the city of Dubai might look if the working class broke down social hierarchy by building habitable scaffolding using arish and bamboo as material. In the main image you can see the different time periods through layering, reflecting how a city is ever changing and adaptable to the needs of the people.

This drawing represents a future city free from hierarchy and and constraints. Without hierarchy people are able to move freely within society and are not bound by the vertical element that is associated with  hierarchy. In this drawing people have freedom of movement and freedom of architecture. People are able to move/shape architecture the suit them. From recycling and reusing old buildings in the past they can create a more suitable present.

  1. I like your idea of breaking down the heirachy. Giving people freedom to move is a good idea, however do you think people will exploit this and choose to occupy the highest spaces? Also, an alternative would be to create a completely flat landscape, where there is no possibility to move up nor down, breaking the heirachy.
