UA9: CIRCULAR CITY

THE FUTURE CITY

Cities could adapt to climate change?
How it could be the life?
Cities it will be cities?

The underground city is a concept based off the past human occupation of caves. In the future, with uncertainty, humanity returns to its roots which are expressed both metaphorically and visually, forming the cycle of architecture. Taking refernce from ´Species of Spaces and Other Pieces´by Georges Perec, areas are subdivided by program and nature, unlike anything we are accustomed today. A new hieracy and social structure is formed, manifested by architecture.

THE CITY WITHOUT PEOPLE

What would a city without people be like?
What role do people play in a city?
What other functions would cease to exist?
What percentage of the city do people occupy/control?
Would colours fade?
What new colours would emerge?
How would the air change?
What would it smell like?
What noise would still exist?
How would the pace change?
Would nature return?
How would the infrastructure change over time?
Would the city be ruins after decades?
What would new discoverers think?
What memories would live on?
...

While many cities around the world were experiencing radical growth,
many cities stopped working because of the virus.
What about Times Square which is the most radical and full of experiences place?
Is it radical without people?
On the other hand, what about the market in india?
Although they may not be radical cities, they are still filled with many experiences.
Without people, we are now realizing that we are not radical.

If we don't solve these problems, we will have to return to the cave, the first residential form of mankind, with leave our radical city behind.

THE MUTANT CITY

It could be the same city?
Exist the city identity?
How long could be exist?
Cities changes?

“We call them by their names, and pretend they are what they used to be.
Cities, however, are undergoing a colossal metamorphosis that is turning them into unprecedented historic objects for which we still have no name or map. (...) Surrounded by mutant cities, we seek refuge in the narcotic placidness of toponymic mirages, but only tourist and mayors still consume such fictions of identity (...) ”
THE MUTANT CITY, Luis Fernández- Galiano
Revista: Arquitectura Viva, 1997

  1. all your sections and Drawings are really interresting because they give us tthe feeling that the city is mooving. Either because of the weather/nature or because of the people who are activated it. You seem would like to know, when does a city die? So according to you, how a city has to die?

  2. We are interested in particular with the death of the city due to lack of human occupacion, which we thought was interesting given the current circumstances. We want to explore the utopian or post-apocaliptic situation of the city using conceptual and fantasy texts. We are not currently set on a definete reason why cities die, however this is likely due to a number of factors. The questions we had set though have led us the realise the importance of people, which can be visualised through our drawings.

  3. Hi, I love the idea and the way you represent it. Even if you have to (obviously) follow your tutor's instructions I'd recommend you to stick to consistent documents. In your case, I might take some of your references and target one of them: is it a EMPTY SPACE? or a way of recycling some of the biggest DUBAI SKYSCRAPERS INTO A CAVE?, Is it about creating some corridors UNDERGROUND?. Looks great but I'd try to use the tools of the architect (software, research...) to address some REALITY (or FAKE REALITY). Great Job!!!

    1. Thank you. In the future we imagine some areas will become dissused and fall apart, hence triggering the recycling of old structures for a modern purpose. This could take many forms from small scale furniture to any entire building. Corridors underground would be useful for connectivity, something which is important for humans.
