Radical Cities by Laura Bernholz

In a fast living time like right now we do not know how and where to rest anymore. So it is
necessary to create spaces to feel comfortable and meet other people. Because it is the
human gene to be social and movable. On the other hand we want to feel safe and
protected. That is the reason why we build more and more properties. The task of a city is to
find a balance between public and private spaces.
Not just a home is a place where we want to spend time also public spaces, parks or green
spaces are. Particularly cities have to be created in a multiple way which needs jobs, traffic
service, health care and social activities.
A city should be not to dense and width otherwise residents get isolated. Also it should be
possible to get to shops, work and other necessary places like hospitals by walking or with
the bike.
The equilibrium state of a city is a important point which is continuously changing like the city
in itself. A city in general can just live with its inhabitants. That means it is important to create
a “green” and sustainable life balance for a healthy and social atmosphere. City means
culture and this can just be reached with interaction.
“Radical” implies a big and fast change of social, political or architectural state. Mostly it is
not a carefully handling. It is a fast act which follows just one idea.
In the chemistry “radical” means a group of atoms behaving as a unit in a number of
compounds. What is similar to the components and needs for a city with its inhabitants.
So what is the meaning of radical city? It seems to be a city without context to the habitat or
a city which is build out of the blue. Radical can be interesting but it is nothing common.
These can be a city which is not existing like that yet. It includes modern architecture and
technology for example. And in its foreground is function before form usually. The radical city
can work as long as the group of people who live they stay unit like in a atom.

  1. I like how you have highlighted the importance of public vs. private space. Are there any cities you currently like which could be used as precedent?
