The City - The Beast
HAVE YOU SEEN THIS CREATURE? THE CITY - THE BEAST
Demeanour – rapid, startling, obnoxious
Hunger – supply and demand
Growl- traffic
Smell – complex
Sight – cameras
Appearance - dirty
The city: the beast that wakes at night. Its dense coat that
obstruct the sun.
A warm, moist odour that emanates from every crevice of its battered
skin.
Unpredictable movement and sly posture but with a twinkle in its eye.
The
low rumble and gruff snort of a creature that is ready and hungry.
´Feed me´ it
says, the consumption of a million organisms is not sufficient.
More, more,
more…
its hungry belly senses the opportunity, the life.
Danger!
But shrouded
by its luxurious coat the creature goes undetected amongst the crowd.
Within
and around, its invisible form contains all.

Cities
first evolved from the prosepct of opportunity. Today, they are still central
hubs for activites but also pose risks to users. Statistics show increased
crime, pollution and ill-health within cities compared to their rural
counterparts. With a rising global population more people than ever are now
city-dwellers, however there are people opposed to the consumption of cities
and their progressive dominance over rural landscapes. Is there a way to find a
balance between the resources of the city whilst still living a wholesome rural
life?
Now it is
necessary to expose the beast.
Catherine Bookham
It is a very interesting and unique approach. So the way we deal with the beast is for us to get out of the city? Or is it bringing the rural to the city?
ResponderEliminarI think a balance is necessary as a growing population proves that removing the city would cause further problems. I think we need to rethink the way our living is structured. I think the two options you mentioned are correlated and dependant on one another. By bringing the countryside into the city we escape from the city as we know it. I really enjoy the book ´Species of Spaces and Other Pieces´ by Georges Perec in pulling apart the way we live.
