Manifesto - Fredrik Olausson
PAST AND FUTURE
DYSTOPIAN TO UTOPIAN
Rising sea levels, extreme heat, drought, mass extinction. The list can continue for at least
this hole text. The list of disasters affected by global warming caused by humanity.
This has to be a wake up call for us to change the way we live. In architecture environmentally
friendly solutions has to be promoted. We have to learn from the past but also from the future.
The past can teach us that it's possible to live in a world without this exaggerated exploiting.
We don't have to build the tallest or live in the biggest house. Instead we can find pride in
our traditional building techniques adapted to our cultural and environmental context.
Hopefully the future will guide us towards a world where humanity and nature live in symbiosis.
Of course this will not just happen over a night. We have to invest in solutions that decreases
emissions. Nature and humanity has to be put before economy and bragging. In architecture we
have to think about how everything from the first stroke with the pen until the last nail being
nailed affect the environment.
Our future vision for Dubai is a city isolated from the extreme heat outside. This might sound
dystopian and of course it is in some way. But by looking both to the past by using the arish
construction technique and to the future by using technically advanced building techniques
the dystopian city turns utopian.
