MANIFESTO - Natalia Wolarek
Working on a Radical City of Dubai we had a great opportunity
to look at architecture from a different perspective, on how architecture may
look like in the future and how it looks right now.
The basic reason for establishing and
developing cities was the natural tendency to create social organizations that
would increase the efficiency of human work. In various historical periods,
economic formations, geographical regions and cities differed in function, size
and form.
Cities are a natural living environment for the modern human being.
What
shapes the city today on a "human scale" are factors directly
affecting human psychology, a sense of aesthetics, security and comfort.
While
working with the project we looked
at the current situation in the world and our sense of sensitivity was moved by
the pandemic situation that we have all experienced.
We began to
treat the city as a system that can be destroyed at any time and the question
was – how can we avoid it? War conflicts, natural disasters, viruses…
That's why
we decided to go to a very radical solution and raise our city in the air.
Our elevated city has the
advantage of being able to detach itself from society and the dangers that come
with the greed for social hierarchy and conflict. During the wars and conflicts
the destruction and devastation took lives of thousands and thousands more are
forced to migrate, becoming displaced, as a result of war conflicts involving
the United Arab Emirates and surrounding nations. The ‘Floating peace city’ is
envisioned as a vertical mixed-use development to house the refugees that have
been forced to flee their homes as a result of war.
Our proposal provides a
city free from the unjust social hierarchy and armed conflicts that these
refugees may encounter on the ground.
